The new cancer care centre at Taranaki Base Hospital has been described as ‘life changing’ for people living with the disease and for the professionals who care for them. Previously, about 300 patients a year have been travelling three hours to Palmerston North for radiation treatment - sometimes for sessions lasting just minutes - but now 80 percent of radiation therapy can be delivered locally.

The 1,600 sqm purpose-built facility includes the region’s first linear accelerator (LINAC), enabling patients to receive advanced cancer treatment while staying close to whānau and support networks. It also features a chemotherapy suite with 10 chairs and 2 isolation rooms, and eight consultation rooms. The beautiful building is light-filled with feature timber ceilings and a restful neutral décor and is targeting a Green Star 5 certification.

Inovo led the planning and operational commissioning for the Taranaki Cancer Centre as part of our wider role on Project Maunga, a multi-stage redevelopment of Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth. Work on Project Maunga included a 20,000-square-meter, six-storey New East Wing Building featuring a rooftop helipad, intensive care, maternity and more.
