In a direct response to a demand for short-term accommodation due to increasing passenger numbers, a new 200 room 4.5 star Novotel hotel opened on the Christchurch International Airport campus in late 2019.
Inovo was initially engaged by Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) as project planners, developing a challenging design and construction master programme. Inovo’s role significantly increased as it became evident that the Main Contractor was not meeting project timelines. Inovo worked closely with the Main Contractor, completing reviews of contractors’ performance and providing advice to CIAL, making adjustments to the master and construction programme, ensuring CIAL’s contractual position was maintained and regularly reporting to CIAL regarding project progress.
In addition to the construction of the hotel itself, a complex programme of works for multi-staged relocation of transport infrastructure was developed, required to facilitate the hotel works while still maintaining operational continuity of the airport campus.
Carefully planned redirection of public traffic, bus and service lanes, and relocation of bus stops and car parking areas, way finding signage and pedestrian access routes took place over eight individual stages, at all times maintaining safe right-of-way for the public. Consideration of in- and above-ground services for each relocation added another level of complexity.
