New Zealand’s first undercover stadium and largest indoor multipurpose arena has a capacity of 30,000 for sporting events and more than 35,000 for concerts.

Inovo was engaged by Hawkins Construction to establish and maintain detailed construction and procurement programmes to assist in the management and delivery of the stadium project in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, a 25 month programme.

Challenges included ground conditions in need of improvement, resulting in 22,000m² of excavated fill, much from buildings demolished to make way for the stadium; and the installation of the 20,500m² ETFE transparent roof.

The plastic roof panels are supported by five steel trusses, with the main 130 metre long truss weighing 390 tonnes. The internal roof clearance at the centre line of the pitch is 37 metres.

The panels are capable of supporting the weight of a car. Rainwater is collected from the surface and recycled to irrigate the pitch, which is real grass strengthened by synthetic grass fibres injected deep into the soil.
