Inovo was the programme manager for the second stage of the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme.

Inovo worked closely with the pipe suppliers and the main contractor to manage the programme of tasks being undertaken by the multiple pipe laying, building and earthworks teams.

The scheme consisted of two main pipe networks including the 56km Chertsey line which was constructed in 1,600mm-900mm diameter GRP pipe and <900mm HDPE, and the 10km Barrhill line which was constructed in 900mm GRP pipe and <900mm HDPE pipe. The project included the construction of a 150,000m² settlement pond and inlet channel, pump stations, inlet/outlet structures, terrace risers, storage pond and hydro station.

The network was laid across a variety of terrain, and crossed State Highway 1 and the main south railway line in multiple locations. The GRP pipes and fittings were purchased by BCI directly from the supplier and handed over to the main contractor, which enabled considerable cost savings and the very tight programme to be achieved.

Subsequently Inovo was engaged by BCI to support them in the construction of a new water storage pond, adding to the five already in use in South Canterbury. The new 1.6 million m³ Akarana Storage Pond allows the scheme to better manage its water take from the Rakaia River, improving the operational efficiency and reliability of supply to its shareholders’ irrigators.
