The Clock Tower and Great Hall in Christchurch’s Historic Place Category 1 Arts Centre closed after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, along with most other heritage buildings across the Arts Centre complex.

Inovo worked in close consultation with the project’s structural engineers and wider consultant team to plan and develop a detailed programme of works that allowed for the meticulous level of care required to restore the buildings, introducing state of the art services and infrastructure, without compromising its beautiful heritage features.

Built in 1877 and 1882 respectively, The Clock Tower and the Great Hall are the oldest buildings in the Arts Centre. The restoration required retrofitted seismic strengthening and preservation of significant heritage features, including the native Kauri and Rimu panelling, iconic turret and stained glass windows, which were painstakingly restored.

The project was recognised in the Canterbury Heritage Awards 2016, taking out both the Supreme and Seismic awards, and in late 2017 won a Merit Award in the UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
