Following the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010/2011, Hawkins Construction was awarded the contract to deliver an 18,000 seat (with potential expansion to 26,000 for major events) temporary stadium within a challenging 100 day build programme.
Inovo was engaged to provide project planning services to assist Hawkins in the delivery of the project, detailing procurement and construction activities and incorporating relocation of key elements such as flood lighting from Carisbrook Stadium in Dunedin, the turf from the earthquake-damaged AMI Stadium and seating and food and beverage portacoms from Eden Park.
The stadium design combines modular buildings and lightweight stand structures with a fabric roof, all built to stringent earthquake standards. Due to the urgent nature of the project, day and night rosters were adopted with night workers focused on tasks that needed to be completed before the next day’s task could be accomplished, such as erection of structural steel framework, electrical work and concrete pours. In one of the largest single concrete pours to take place in Christchurch, 130 trucks delivered concrete for the platforms underneath the north and south stands and the players’ facilities in one night. Construction was successfully completed in less than 80 days, ahead of schedule, and in time for the Canterbury Crusaders’ first home game of the 2012 Super Rugby Season.
