A feat of engineering, the construction of this impressive water storage pond utilised world class concept design, control systems and civil works methods.

Following the previously successful delivery of the Barhill Chertsey irrigation scheme upgrade in 2015, Inovo was engaged by BCI to support them in the construction of a new water storage pond, adding to the five already in use in South Canterbury.

The new 1.6 million cubic metre Akarana storage pond allows the scheme to better manage its water take from the Rakaia River, improving the operational efficiency and reliability of supply to its shareholders’ irrigators.

The 40 hectare site has a maximum water depth of 5 metres. The pond is formed from gravel embankments with an internal HDPE geomembrane liner on the sides and a loess/silt liner on the base of the pond. It is filled by diesel generator powered transfer pumps from the RDR and is connected to the existing BCI pipeline to utilise the water by gravity.
