The objective of the purpose-built Kaikoura Health centre was to provide a more integrated system, providing care closer to home for its patients, who previously had to travel to Christchurch to receive specialist services.

The health centre has been constructed on the site of the old Kaikoura Hospital, parts of which were more than 100 years old. It accommodates 21 beds including 14 long stay rooms, six medical/acute beds, a delivery/postnatal maternity suite, a resuscitation room, observation bed, and radiology, along with multi-purpose GP rooms, physiotherapy, community dental, optometry, and space for visiting health specialists.

State of the art technology includes video conferencing enabling patients to have consultations with their specialist health provider without having to leave Kaikoura. The centre can also provide palliative care, post-surgery support, pre-operation care, nurse-led fracture clinics, dementia patient support, health promotion activities, and wound care clinics within the Kaikoura community.
